Battle Of The Blinds: Are You Playing Too Tight? (Real Coaching Session)

In this coaching session, I walked a player who usually splits his time between cash games and tournaments through some important blind vs blind heuristics for different scenarios and board textures. Looking at blind-vs-blind at ~30bb, with emphasis on SB limp/BB check trees, flop aggregates, and how textures drive sizing and frequency.

5:15 setup: 30bb SB limp/BB check; SB polar raises, many offsuit limps; BB polar raises (offsuit trash); limp–check SPR ≈10
8:33 pool read: if BB under-raises trash/over-raises linear, their check-back range weakens → SB can probe more on high cards
9:58 aggregates: SB checks a lot overall; two sizes only (≈B33, ≈B75)
12:03 monotone flops: SB near range-check (BB has many suiteds/flushes)
14:59 ace-high: SB bets more (mostly small); big bets rare/special
17:02 king/queen/jack-high: similar to ace-high but more checking; low-paired boards (K22, Q33…) are heavy checks
19:49 ten-/nine-high: still small overall; low-paired boards = range checks
22:58 eight-/seven-/six-high: if SB bets, prefer bigger; still high check rates
25:28 diagnosis: overbluff later streets often starts with c-betting flop too much
27:04 exploit idea: vs linear BB raises, expect texture shifts (more bets on high-card, pure checks on most low-card) and more small-bet utility
30:36 after SB checks: BB stab ≈45% rainbow/44% two-tone/36% mono; big bets mainly on condensed SB-check, high-card boards
34:16 BB best stabs: low-card/trips/paired, monotone-connected; small size favored
35:42 two boards chosen: A J 5 and 8 8 3
36:12 A J 5 (SB): mix ~60% bet; many hand classes mix; pool under-raises backdoor junk
42:07 A J 5 turns: mostly overbet-or-check (≈2E) on non-ace/jack/five turns
44:31 8 8 3 (SB check, BB IP): BB bets ~70%; weak K/Q highs often check; bottom double-BDs bet
48:50 SB vs BB bet on 8 8 3: XR value = trips+/overpairs; bluff from Q-high or worse with BDs; avoid XR A/K-high
52:13 pool tendency: BB rarely click-back 3-bets flop → SB XR realizes well
54:40 post-XR turns on 8 8 3: mostly 2E-or-check; eight turn = range check; bluff straight draws freely (few IP jams)
58:02 contrast dynamic turns (A J 5 with FD): IP has protection jams; OOP prefers lower-SDV draws as bluffs

Takeaways
Limp–check pots are high SPR; SB should check far more than most players do.
Monotone flops: near range-check for SB (BB owns suited density).
Ace-high: SB small-bets more; big bets mostly unnecessary.
K/Q/J-high: even more checking; low-paired boards are heavy checks for SB.
Low-card boards: if SB bets, favor bigger sizes—but still lots of checking.
Don’t over-cbet flop; later “overbluff” problems usually start there.
