Functional Training is a term that was coined not too long ago and it caused quite a stir in the fitness world. While it may provide a little bit of merit to some extent, there are two sides to the coin of Functional Training that turn it into a problem rather than a solution.
1. Marketing Strategy Behind FT
Since the term is pretty new and experienced some kind of renaissance in the last decade, it's been used as a marketing tactic by coaches all over the world. Its definition varies widely and always hinges upon the perspective of the individual practitioner or coach who engages in Functional Training. Since its description isn't very straight forward, it can be used to sell outlandish looking exercises as some kind of "secret" to exceptional benefits that conventional training methods cannot provide.
2. Missing Standards On Exercise Selection
Functional Training as a term, description or training method is loosely defined. As a consequence, the term "functional" is individually valued, defined or understood. While an elderly person values squatting and lungeing to be more equipped and stronger in daily activities, a bodybuilder for example might attribute the term "functional" to a specific, muscle building exercise to win a bodybuilding show. No given standards create optimal breeding ground for exercises that don't have to account for any standard because there is none given. The only limit to "functional exercises" seems to be the imagination of the practitioner or coach.
Let's compare Functional Training to its more robust counterparts. "Strength Training" for example is the endeavor to improve, strengthen and build structural integrity such as muscles and bones. It also improves neuromuscular adaptation, muscle triggering and changes the make up of the cell structure. "Endurance Training" is the undertaking of improving and adapting the body's capacity to metabolize different substrates and use them more efficiently. "Skill Practice" is the idea to repeat a certain movement - that depends on specificity of performance - to achieve a high level of mastery. While the first two are physiological adaptations, the last one is mainly an adaption of habitual movement patterns that are continually replicated to perfection.
Strength training, endurance training and skill practice possess evidence based fundamentals that can be held to a certain standard. In stark contrast, Functional Training merely remains in the realm of undefined workout regimens.
