All the Lonely Guys.
I’ve been working on this song and video for almost 30 years. I was driving home from a gig at the former Glen Sanders Mansion, and I decided to take the long way home down State St. in Schenectady and down Central Ave. in Colonie. Along the route, I saw numerous strip joints, or expensive traps for lonely men. Each place had lots of cars in their lots. No way was I going to look inside any of those places.
From the stage at my numerous gigs in many bands at a variety of venues, I would see the dismal scenes described in the Carole King song “Snow Queen” play out time and time again. It’s a song about looking for love and getting shut down in humiliating ways. Talking with these guys – or maybe interviewing them - during breaks was depressing. I asked them about the “terrible places” mentioned in my song and they all had different answers. And none of the answers were inspiring.
I had driven my Capri to the Glen Sanders gig as I was playing someone else’s drums and all I had to bring was my drumsticks. So the idea for this song was hatched as I was cruising in the night listening to the rumble of the Capri’s engine shifting through the gears. But just a song wasn’t enough. I needed a video to go along with it. I didn’t have a budget for hiring actors, so I play most of the parts. The few actors in this video I just gave cash to on the spot. The women in the video were staffing a booth at an international motorcycle show in NYC and volunteered to help sing a line in the song. I mixed a few different styles of music in the song that I normally don't delve into. But I felt song needed these styles set the mood. In the instrumental section, I tried to emulate lonely music of the late-night movie show "bumpers" from the late 1970s at about 3am that one would hear on the New York City TV stations.
This is a study in social isolation that has become so much worse than it was in 1996. Social media and AI, which didn’t exist when I had the original idea, have certainly contributed to the isolation. I only went to the cover pages of the AI sites. I was too afraid of what I would find going into them. There are so many dating site traps on the internet that suck people in for all kinds of scams and disaster. There are so many news stories and Dateline episodes about this. The pandemic 6 years certainly added to the social isolation that many have not yet recovered from.
I released a version of this long ago. But I wasn’t happy with the final product. So here it is in 2026. Please let me know what you think of it. Hopefully this time I got it right. And be kind to lonely people.
