In a remarkable find near Jerusalem, archaeologists have unearthed the chained remains of a woman buried 1,500 years ago during the Byzantine period. Discovered at the Khirbat el-Masani monastery site, the skeleton was initially assumed to be male due to the presence of heavy iron chains wrapped around the arms, legs, and torso. However, further analysis confirmed it was a woman, aged 30 to 60, who likely practiced extreme Christian asceticism—a form of religious self-denial involving physical suffering and isolation.
This burial is unique, as very few such examples exist of women engaging in such severe bodily discipline. Researchers believe she lived in solitude, dedicating her life to prayer and penance, using chains as a symbol of her devotion and restraint from worldly desires. The site is being studied further to learn more about the role of female ascetics in early Christianity
