How Ireland tried to ban jazz

In 1934 a parish priest in Cloone Co Leitrim, Fr Peter Conefrey, tried to ban jazz. He had the support of much of the country including Éamon de Valera, then the Irish Free State leader, who feared the "jungle music" as it was called would lead impressionable young Irishmen and women to ruin and undermine traditional Irish music. Some 3,000 people took part in a New Year's Day march against jazz in 1934.
