What is Servant Leadership?

Servant leadership is the concept of when you are a servant leader and aim to serve the people that you lead. Servant leadership requires that you care about the people you lead to become a better leader.

Not only is it a vital leadership skill to have, but developing your leadership style around servant leadership will grow everyone around you.

Servant leadership can be seen throughout history through many greats such as Nelson Mandela. He is the perfect example of what servant leadership is, by doing everything he can for the people of South Africa. He did not consider himself a leader, but he had a deep desire to change the world for the better.

You see, servant leadership encourage leadership that makes you a better leader and a servant leader. Why wouldn’t you want to help people as a servant leader? Servant leadership if adopted properly will lead to success in leadership. History has shown how servant leadership has led to prosperity and happiness

Normally you don’t think of servant leadership when leading your staff. You might think you are a servant leader, but not in the way that we are talking about today. Truly adopting servant leadership is going to leads to enlightenment and servant leader success.

This is what Greenleaf’s Centre for Leadership says: “Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world”.

Chris Igwe mentions he would certainly put Sir Richard Branson’s leadership style as one of being a Servant Leader. He is a prime example of how to become a servant leader using servant leadership as a leadership skill in your leadership style.

However, there can be pitfalls to Servant Leadership.

You need to make sure to manage your team as a servant leader. Servant leadership is going to requires clear communication and encourage leadership of staff.

Deadlines need to be met and the team needs to know this, don’t let this small downfall of servant leadership put you off. Effective leadership comes down to building your leadership qualities, so that you can find servant leader success.

The key is not to go back to old ways of a dictatorial or autocratic approach to leading the team.

The great thing about Servant Leadership is that you, as the leader, learn as much as the people you lead, because you are far more conscious of the significance of the role you play and the impact it has on others.
