COURT UPHOLDS CONVICTION

District Attorney Paul Czajka announced Thursday, June 24, 2021 that the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department, affirmed the conviction of Goliath Van Alphen, who was sentenced in 2016 for multiple sex crimes against children.
Mr. Van Alphen was convicted along with his co-defendants, Eugene Shackleton, William Wendover, and Jeannine Van Alphen on October 18, 2016 after a jury trial of numerous counts of child sexual

abuse including multiple counts of Predatory Sexual Assault against a Child, a class A-II felony.
The trial lasted 12 days before Honorable Judge Richard M. Koweek. DA Czajka and Deputy Chief ADA Ryan Carty prosecuted the case and called the child victims, each of whom was under 11 years of age at the time of the abuse, as witnesses. The jury of nine women and three men announced their verdict after deliberating for approximately 5 hours. Hon. Judge Richard M. Koweek sentenced Goliath Van Alphen to a prison term of 124 1/3 years to life on October 24, 2016. The other co-defendants received sentences as follows: Eugene Shackleton, 71 years to life; William Wendover, 60 ½ years to life; and Jeannine Van Alphen, 50 years to life.
Chief Assistant District Attorney James Carlucci argued the appeal on behalf of the District Attorney’s office on April 22, 2021. Attorney John Ferrara, Esq., of Monticello, represented the appellant, Mr. Van Alphen. The Appellate Division announced its decision today, June 24, 2021.

HUDSON — Four people found guilty of a number of child-sex crimes were sentenced in Columbia County Court on Tuesday afternoon to serve up to life in prison.

Goliath Van Alphen, of Claverack; his former wife, Jeanine Van Alphen-Moot, of Hillsdale; Eugene Shackleton, of Copake; and William Wendover III, of Cairo, were found guilty Aug. 10 on the most serious counts stemming from the abuse of multiple children between June 2009 and Feburary 2011.

Van Alphen, who was found guilty of 11 felony charges in the case, was sentenced to 124 2/3 years to life. Van Alphen Moot was given 50 years to life. Shackleton was given 71 years to life, and Wendover was given 69 ½ year to life in prison.


Each defendant had two of the charges they were found guilty on thrown out before the sentencing, but the sentences handed down were still severe enough to send the four to prison for what may be the rest of their lives.
