Summer vacation in Suriname

A look into our summer vacation journey in Suriname.

We spent four weeks in Suriname. The first two weeks we stayed near the Kwattaweg and after that at the Emielaan, close to Hermitage Mall. Over the weeks we discovered more and more of Suriname. A lot of family visits, a lot of time together, trips, different places and villages. The first weekend we went to a camp with the whole family, and the last weekend we ended the trip with a farewell gathering.

Suriname is beautiful and very unique. The whole environment and atmosphere feel different. Everything is colorful and open, always warm, with a lot of greenery and colorful houses. At the same time, it can be confronting to see how things look in many places, while the country has so much potential. You see trash everywhere along the roads and in the ditches, broken and abandoned houses, and places that are not taken care of. Also the prices in Suriname are almost as high as in the Netherlands, while people earn much less. For example, people working at European call centers sometimes earn more than a school teacher.

Many things felt new, but at the same time familiar. Getting to know family was very special. The connection was there right away and it quickly felt like home. This video is made up of recordings of moments I captured along the way. I tried to show the experience as I lived it. The moments, the calm, the colors, the buildings and the connections.
