In many ways, costume defined success in the Elizabethan and Jacobean period. If you were commissioning a portrait during the 16th and 17th centuries, you wanted an artist who could paint your costume and luxuriously as you could wear it.
In this case, the artist of the present portrait - William Larkin (c. 1580-1619) - has delighted in all the intricacies that a Jacobean tailor could throw at him.
Until recently, the artist of this portrait was unknown. Through expert conservation, we were able to remove the layers of discoloured varnish and service dirt to reveal the identifiable stylistic traits of William Larkin’s hand, which lay beneath. Now removed, the crisp detailing of the costume and the highly realistic depiction of the sitter’s face can be again enjoyed.
This artwork is exhibited in our exhibition ‘Love’s Labour’s Found: Elizabethan and Jacobean Portraiture’ | 21st April – 28th May 2021
