Star Stitch Knitting Tutorial

Learn how to work the Star Stitch in this tutorial video by knitwear designer and knitting instructor Shaina Bilow. The Star Stitch is a fascinating textural stitch that is worked over three stitches and is featured in many of Shaina’s designs.

This video shows how to work the Star Stitch flat as well as in the round and the Star Stitch pattern is written below for flat and circular knitting.

Star Stitch worked Flat (multiple of 4 stitches plus one)

STAR: Work into three stitches: Purl three together, yarn over, purl three together.

Row 1 (RS): With Background Color, knit.
Row 2 (WS): With Background Color, purl.
Row 3: With Star Color, *slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back, knit 3; repeat from * to the last stitch, slip 1 stitch purlswise with yarn in back.
Row 4: With Star Color, *slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, work STAR; repeat from * to the last stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front.
Row 5: With Background Color, knit.
Row 6: With Background Color, purl.
Row 7: With Star Color, slip 3 stitches purlwise with yarn in back, *knit 3, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back; repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, slip 2 stitches purlwise with yarn in back.
Row 8: With Star Color, slip 3 stitches purlwise with yarn in front, *work STAR, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front; repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, slip 2 stitches purlwise with yarn in front.

Star Stitch worked in the Round (multiple of 4 stitches)

STAR: Work into three stitches: Knit three together, yarn over, knit three together.

Round 1: With Background Color, knit.
Round 2: With Background Color, knit.
Round 3: With Star Color, *slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back, knit 3; repeat from * to the end of the round.
Round 4: With Star Color, *slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back, work STAR; repeat from * to the end of the round.
Round 5: With Background Color, knit.
Round 6: With Background Color, knit.
Round 7: With Star Color, slip 3 stitches purlwise with yarn in back, *knit 3, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back; repeat from * to the last stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back.
Round 8: With Star Color, slip 3 stitches purlwise with yarn in back, *work STAR, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back; repeat from * to the last stitch, work STAR over the last stitch of Round 8 and the first two stitches of the next round, replacing the beginning of round marker after the first stitch of the star.
