Melmoth the Wanderer (1820-2020) is an examination of wandering in the contemporary city. An artist seeking inspiration for a project based on the classic Irish novel Melmoth the Wanderer (Maturin’s unique anatomy of torture and cruelty dating from 1820) travels across Europe (to its “demonic cities”, León, Madrid, St Petersburg, Paris) absorbing what remains of the book in the locations associated with the writers it influenced (Baudelaire, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Lautreámont, Breton). Faced with issues such as the forced migration crisis, she discovers that a context remains for attempts to find the hidden zones of cities haunted by literary history and, armed with a strong commitment to the past and to the politics of memory, to live ethically according to ideas found in fiction and art.
In Melmoth the Wanderer (1820-2020) Fergus Daly continues to explore a hybrid form powered by soundless narration - the strategy is to steer film and literature into a zone of indiscernibility wherein aesthetic, political and philosophical questions can be mapped with precision.
