The Five Great Forests of Mesoamerica - Protecting Our Shared Birds

Each fall, billions of migratory birds lift off from parks and backyards in North America and funnel into Central America’s last large forests, where many will spend over half the year. A new study from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) reveals that Central America’s Five Great Forests (5GF) are crucial for migratory birds, supporting between one-tenth and nearly one-half of the global populations of 40 species — including Wood Thrush, Golden-winged Warblers, and Broad-winged Hawks.

The Cornell Lab’s Center for Conservation Media partnered with WCS to illuminate how birds connect us across the hemisphere. Our shared goal is to link people across the places these birds rely on throughout their full annual cycle, and to highlight the local stewards leading the fight to keep Central America’s largest forests standing so that we can all keep welcoming our birds back year after year.

Los Cinco Grandes Bosques de Mesoamérica - Protegiendo Nuestras Aves Compartidas

Cada otoño, miles de millones de aves migratorias despegan de parques y jardines de Norteamérica y se dirigen hacia los últimos grandes bosques de Mesoamérica, donde muchas pasarán más de la mitad del año. Un nuevo estudio del Laboratorio de Ornitología de Cornell y la Sociedad para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre (WCS) revela que los Cinco Grandes Bosques de Mesoamérica (5GF por sus siglas en inglés) son cruciales para las aves migratorias, ya que albergan entre una décima parte y casi la mitad de las poblaciones mundiales de 40 especies, entre las que se incluyen el zorzal del bosque, la reinita alidorada y el gavilán de ala ancha.

El Centro de Medios de Comunicación para la Conservación del Laboratorio de Cornell se asoció con la WCS para poner de relieve cómo las aves nos conectan en todo el hemisferio. Nuestro objetivo común es vincular a las personas de los lugares de los que dependen estas aves a lo largo de su ciclo anual completo, y destacar a los guardianes locales que lideran la lucha por mantener en pie los bosques más grandes de Mesoamérica, para que todos podamos seguir dando la bienvenida a nuestras aves año tras año.
