Today, with the TT lap record standing at a staggering 133.962mph, doing a 100mph lap would not generate a second thought. In 1957, doing the ‘ton’ was compared to the four minute mile, or breaking the sound barrier! The excitement generated when hard-riding Scotsman Bob McIntyre, on his 500cc four cylinder Gilera, recorded a speed of 101.03 mph was immense. He won the Golden Jubilee Junior Race that year too and his other win came in the 1959 Formula 1 500cc race on a Norton.
On Saturday 26th August 2017, the clock will be turned back to the time when Scotsman Bob McIntyre made history and appropriately, Michael Dunlop, fresh from the first sub 17-minute lap at this year’s TT, will pay tribute to McIntyre’s achievement with a uniquely spectacular celebration lap, complete with replica kit and on board an identical dustbin faired Gilera, meticulously recreated by Kay Engineering.
The tribute lap is set to be the highlight of a packed weekend of entertainment with a heady mix of Castrol induced nostalgia, ear-splitting noise and breath-taking racing, coupled with a packed programme of special events, retro entertainment and classic tunes.
