(30 Jul 2018) The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Hun Sen may be poised to claim a clean sweep of all 125 seats in the National Assembly, following Sunday's general election.
A party spokesman told the Associated Press on Monday that they were awaiting verification from the National Election Committee.
Yara Suos said such a result would be "beyond our expectation."
Several Western governments have already decried the election, believing the banning of the popular opposition party, the CNRP (Cambodia National Rescue Party), which posed a real threat to Hun Sen, made the poll a sham. Such a result, if confirmed, would only intensify the skepticism.
But Yara Suos rejected the criticism, saying such government had no right to denigrate the poll if they did not send observers.
"We do not believe anyone that is not coming to observe, just observe the elections through the satellites," he said.
Whatever the official result, Hun Sen has clearly cemented his hold on power and appears to be completely unchallenged within the country.
"They believe that our party is the only party to trust that could provide a better life for the future," the spokesman said, accounting for why he thought CPP had taken so much of the vote.
Critics have said that a blatant campaign of intimidation against opposition supporters was a key factor driving the vote in this general election.
