109. Kiln Opening 66 | Glaze Tests, Giant Mug & Memorial Kitten | Far Forest Ceramics

Come with me for a kiln opening in Bella, my smaller kiln — but this firing holds some big emotions and beautiful tests.

Inside this kiln are two very special pieces:
🐾 A sentimental memorial kitten sculpture, made with love for my Dad’s grave — simple, heartfelt, and deeply personal.
☕ A super-sized striped mug for my son in Canada, thrown from 1.1kg of flecked stoneware clay and holding 605ml / 20.5 fl oz. He loves colour, so I’ve gone bold and playful with the glaze choices — fingers crossed I’ve hit the brief!

I’m also testing out glaze combinations on flecked stoneware clay, aiming to find the perfect finishes for a commissioned dinnerware set — something that works well across both horizontal and vertical surfaces. To help, I’ve made both vertical and horizontal test tiles using combinations like Running Hot Chowder and a few exciting new pairings.

✨ Bonus: I’ve included pre-fired glaze application photos in this video too — so you can see exactly how the glaze looked before going into the kiln, and how it transformed through the fire. A great side-by-side for fellow potters and glaze geeks!
