The Global Teacher Prize is a US $1 million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession.
The prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers – not only on their students but on the communities around them.
At the start of this Award Announcement, which took place during the 2016 Global Education & Skills Forum, Salma Hayek takes to the stage to highlight the central importance of ensuring that all children receive a high quality education and the central role that teachers play in helping to achieve that objective.
After completing her remarks, Ms. Hayek then introduces Pope Francis, who highlights the critical work of the Varkey Foundation and the invaluable work of teachers in creating a better world for all.
Pope Francis concludes his remarks by announcing that Hanan Al Hroub was selected as the winner of 2016 Global Teacher Prize.
