On Sunday, March 16, the Chesapeake Railway Association, based in Maryland, hosted their annual St. Patrick's Day trip - this year, chartering a caboose hop on the Walkersville Southern Railroad, and BJVP was invited to videotape the event.
Originally, the CRA had hoped to run GE 44-ton switcher #9331, formerly of the Strasburg Rail Road - however, last minute problems with that and the GE 45-ton switcher meant that a different form of motive power had to be used. Enter EMD Model 40 #101 - only one of 11 ever built by EMD.
#101 pulled the three-caboose train to the northernmost end of the line, the first time an excursion has reached that end of the Walkersville Southern trackage. The train worked its way south, performing a few runbys for those in attendance.
Enjoy this video of a rare engine on rare trackage with on the Walkersville Southern! For more information on the CRA, please visit their website at http://www.chessierail.org/
