A technology powerhouse and strategic gateway off China’s east coast, Taiwan has long lived under constant pressure. It considers itself independent. China considers it its own territory.


In a move that raised eyebrows in Beijing, Taipei has announced it will expand defence spending by 40 billion dollars and procure more advanced weapons from the United States.


But this perceived threat comes at a complex time for the unofficial relationship between Washington and Taipei. The United States and China have reached a fragile truce in their trade dispute, prompting questions over whether President Trump would risk that stability to support Taiwan.


Further escalating tensions are recent comments from Japan’s prime minister, who said a Chinese attack on Taiwan would threaten Japan and justify a military response.
