The Java Suite by Lithuanian-born composer Godowsky is a solo piano work consisting of twelve movements, divided into four parts. Godowsky was fond of travelling and during the course of his travels, he visited the island of Java between 1922 and 1923 for a seven-month stay. This sojourn left Godowsky with a particularly strong impression, inspiring the composition of the Java Suite. The work as a whole reflects the composer's tonal impression of the natural landscapes, cultural elements and society of early 20th century Java. The Java Suite features some of Godowsky's most inventive writings, combining contrapuntal texture and Western musical idioms with exotic elements. The influence of the Gamelan music is apparent throughout the whole suite, which extensively uses pentatonic elements.
