Line by line analysis of the US statement on Türkiye

The United States has been following clearly different and supportive policies towards Türkiye recently. President Trump’s warm messages towards Türkiye during his meeting with Netanyahu in the Oval Office and his description of Türkiye as a “key country” in the Syria issue reveal that Washington has assigned a special role to Ankara in its regional strategies. So, what are the US’s expectations from Türkiye? GZT Editor-in-Chief Doğukan Gezer asks, Journalist Nedret Ersanel answers

According to Trump’s statements, Turkey is a critical actor for America in the region thanks to both its strategic location and its strong army. Türkiye’s potential to become an important center for gas shipments to Europe and its being seen as the focal point of the Spice Road project, which could be an alternative to China’s Belt-Road Initiative, are among the main reasons for this favoritism. This policy is also a strategic balancing move against Russia and China

However, the fact that Ankara initiated relations with the Trump administration while the Biden era was ongoing shows the existence of a parallel relationship established early between the two countries. Turkey has reshaped its policies in Iraq and Syria during this process and strengthened its regional position. All these developments indicate that the US's Turkey policy will deepen in the coming years
