Diné College Hosts Second Annual Rez Botics Tournament, Expands Robotics Opportunities for Navajo Students
TSAILE, Ariz. Feb. 8, 2025, Diné College Land Grant Office Extension and Outreach hosted the second annual Rez Botics Tournament, uniting students in a competitive robotics event supported by Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) and Coconuts Team 2486 from Flagstaff. The tournament celebrated significant achievements while highlighting the growing impact of STEM education on the Navajo Nation.
This year marked a milestone for Rez Botics, which became its region within the FIRST Tech Challenge program. The change guarantees Navajo teams an annual spot at the prestigious FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas, amplifying opportunities for students to showcase their skills on an international stage.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren attended the event, offering his support and pledging to continue backing robotics programs within the Navajo Nation. Adding further expertise and inspiration to the tournament, Navajo student volunteers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) served as judges, mentoring young participants throughout the competition.
"We are so excited to see this program grow," said David Thompson, FIRST Tech Challenge Program Delivery Partner. "Now, our winning teams will get the chance to compete with students from all over the world—including places like Israel, Australia, and Taipei. It's an amazing opportunity for our students to learn and connect."
The event saw an increase in participation, with organizers targeting growth of at least 20% annually. Plans are already in motion to broaden the tournament's reach next year.
This year's competition results will send two Navajo teams to the World Championship and allow two others to compete in major international events in countries such as Mexico and Canada.
With support from NTEC and Diné College, Rez Botics continues to inspire Navajo students to explore STEM and pursue innovation.
