Operations with Rational Numbers: Add, Subtract, Multiply
Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction, where the numerator and the denominator are integers, and the denominator is not zero. Examples include:
When we work with rational numbers, we use the same rules we use for whole numbers, but we must be careful with signs and denominators.
Addition:
To add rational numbers with the same denominator, add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
If the denominators are different, find the Least Common Denominator (LCD), then add.
Subtraction:
Change subtraction to addition of the opposite.
Then follow the same steps as in addition.
Multiplication:
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
Simplify your answer if possible.
Key Tip:
Always simplify your final answer and pay attention to positive and negative signs
