Mykenae in Greece from Treasury of Atreus to Lion Gate

Mycenae is an archaeological site near Mykines in Argolis, north-eastern Peloponnese, Greece. It is located about 120 kilometres south-west of Athens; 11 kilometres north of Argos; and 48 kilometres south of Corinth. In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilization—a military stronghold which dominated much of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and parts of southwest Anatolia. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae. At its peak in 1350 BC, the citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 32 hectares (79 acres).
The first correct identification of Mycenae in modern literature was in 1700, during a survey conducted by the Venetian engineer Francesco Vandeyk, he used Pausanias's description of the Lion Gate to identify the ruins of Mycenae. In 1999 the archeological site of Mycenae was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with the nearby site of Tiryns, because of its historical importance as the center of the Mycenaean civilization, its outstanding architecture and its testimony to the development of Ancient Greek civilization.
Greece is a cradle of western civilization, cradle of science ( most scientific discipline names came from Greek) democracy, theater, literature , logic, You name it Without this tiny on a global scale piece of land the population of humankind could easily be 10 times less than it is now and most of us might be still clad in animal skins and sleep on the ground on the same kind of skins. I visited Greece for the 4[th time in October 2025 with my wife and three kids. My wife drove our rented car for 2690 km 8 day trip over at least 16 destinations, including 11 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Mycenae and Tityns, Epidaurus, Mystra, Bassae ( Apollo Temple), Olympia, Vergina ( Philip Tomb) . Meteora, Zagori (+ Vikos gorge), Delphi, H. Loukas Monastery, Acropolis of Athens, etc. Other prominent places include Nafplio, Monemvasia, Ioannina, Lamia, Konitsa etc.
Those make up only a small minority among 399 UNESCO World Heritage sites and 87 countries that I have visited. In addition to 100s of cities, towns, museums churches and cathedral there many dozen of mountains and trails that I hiked or climbed by myself or with my children and wife as high as Peak Lenin 7134 m, including Elbrus ,5642 that I climbed to the summit 5 times with my wife and children as young as 8, 9,14 ( in 3 different expeditions with children), Ojos del Salado ( stopping 40-50 m below the summit watching my 9-year old son Peter summiting this highest volcano on Earth 6893 m ), John Muir Trail ( 360 km in 12 days) , Capital Peak with 7 year old Yunona Bukasova, North to South Rim of Grand Canyon, 42 km in 17 hours with 5 and 7 year old Alice and Yunona and so on .
