In the mid-1970s producer NICK LERA explored the 3ft 6in (1067 mm) gauge railways of Indonesia which still had in service the most exotic collection of antique steam locomotives in the world. Scattered around the tropical islands of Java and Sumatra were over 14 types including big Mallet articulateds in the mountains, rack and pinion engines in the jungle, the unique Surabaya city steam tram, tiny sugar plantation engines, and a rare prize for the British railfan, an elegant former express 2-4-0 built in Manchester in 1880. Modernisation in the late 1970s swept away this treasure trove for good, but the best if it was captured on high quality 16mm colour film before it was too late.
