Thailand Canals and Floating Markets | A side of Bangkok you’ve never seen! (An unforgettable time)

Bangkok is known for its towering skyscrapers, luxurious malls, and bustling streets, but what did the city look like before modern development took over? Before roads, Bangkok was a city of canals, where life moved by boat instead of car, earning it the nickname “The Venice of the East.” Today, we’re stepping back in time to experience that side of Bangkok—where the city’s past is still alive, traditions thrive, and the waterways remain a vital part of daily life.

Join us as we embark on an unforgettable long-tail boat tour through the hidden canals of Bangkok. Our local guide, whom we found through Airbnb Experiences, is taking us deep into the heart of the city’s traditional way of life. We’ll visit floating markets, temples, and small villages, all connected by the intricate network of canals.

Our adventure begins at a local temple, where we participate in a traditional Thai prayer ritual. We fold the petals of a lotus flower—a practice that is meant to help with concentration—and offer incense and gold leaf to a Buddha statue. Jonathan places her gold leaf on the left ear to remind himself to be open to new experiences, while Noelle places hers on the nose for heightened intuition and good luck.

From there, we head to the water, where we feed fish for good karma before hopping on our long-tail boat. The canals stretch far beyond what we expected, forming a maze of homes, markets, and daily life. We pass traditional wooden houses built right on the water, banana trees lining the banks, and even stores that float from house to house, delivering goods like an old-school version of Amazon! We also keep our eyes peeled for giant monitor lizards, which are known to live in the canals.

After cruising through the waterways, we arrive at Bon Mai Chai Khlong Market, a place where Thai people come to learn about their own culture and keep their traditions alive. Here, older generations teach younger generations skills like traditional music and cooking. A kind musician even plays Happy Birthday for Jonathan on the xylophone!

We also get the chance to try our hand at Thai cooking—learning how to make a coconut-based snack over a barbecue. (Jonathan’s first attempt may not have been a masterpiece, but at least they let him keep it!)

Next, we explore a peaceful garden area, where Thai basil and other herbs grow. The walkways are built over the water, leading to a huge orchid farm filled with countless hanging orchids. It’s incredible to see how they grow with their roots just dangling in the air.

Finally, we make our way to Bangkok’s famous floating market. Though it no longer floats like it once did, it remains a bustling hub of food, shopping, and entertainment. We sample a variety of dishes, including fried green papaya salad, Thai basil chicken, and scallops. Noelle even tries a scallop for the first time in her life!

This experience has been one of the most unforgettable adventures we’ve had in Bangkok. Some trips fade over time, but this is one we’ll never forget.
