James Price Johnson was an American pianist and composer who was influenced by the ragtime of Scott Joplin and became a major figure in the early years of jazz. He was a stride pianist - striding with his left hand between bass notes and chords - and many others followed his example, including Fats Waller and Duke Ellington.
