New California law changes how high school seniors get into CSU colleges

A new California law is changing how high school seniors are admitted into the California State University system. Beginning in the new year, qualified students will be automatically admitted to multiple CSU campuses, reducing application stress and paperwork. The direct admissions program applies to 16 CSU campuses, including Sacramento State, CSU Northridge, and Cal State LA, while high-demand schools such as San Diego State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo still require separate applications. State Senator Christopher Cabaldon, who introduced the bill, says the law builds on earlier pilot programs and aims to boost enrollment at CSU campuses facing sharp declines while keeping more students in California. State leaders say the program will expand further by fall 2027.
