The wheels on Derrike Cope's Chevrolet Lumina had not stopped rolling yet before people had started calling his win over Dale Earnhardt in the 1990 Daytona 500 a fluke.
Was it a surprise? Absolutely. Was it an upset of the highest magnitude? Yes. In fact, the case can be made that it was the biggest upset in NASCAR history.
But was it just a fluke? No, it was not. His team, led by crew chief Buddy Parrott, had worked too hard over the winter to cheapen the victory that way. Cope was competitive all day ... the best of the rest, behind Earnhardt. And win Dale's tire went away on the last lap, Derrike Cope was right there to take advantage.
That's anything BUT a fluke.
