Join us for an exciting panel discussion - hosted by the Danube Institute and a Croatian public policy think tank Centre for Public Policy and Economic Analysis (CEA) - on the future of the European Union and the challenges it faces in balancing policy reform with member state sovereignty. The event will explore key questions:

The EU's Overreach in Member State Politics: How the European Commission is overstepping its treaty-based mandate by taking sides in domestic politics? What are the implications of initiatives like the "Democracy Shield" proposal, and how can it be ensured that the EU respects the democratic processes of its member states?
Rebalancing EU Policy: In what policy areas does the EU’s overreach clash with member-state sovereignty? How can the EU strike a balance between necessary cooperation and respecting the principle of limited government, particularly in light of growing voices advocating for subsidiarity?
The Immigration Conundrum: While many EU member states—particularly frontline countries like Hungary and Croatia—have reached a growing consensus on the need to reform immigration policies to better reflect current realities, their efforts are increasingly constrained by legacy frameworks established prior to 2015. These outdated policies, still entrenched at the EU level, limit national flexibility and hinder the implementation of real solutions. Why does institutional inertia within the EU continue to stymie meaningful change? And how can member states effectively tackle mass migration flows if EU-level governance resists meaningful reform?
