Recently a few graduates of architecture have shared their experiences with me about how they ended up in jobs that have nothing to do with architecture. As far as I can find online, the statistics and reasons are yet to be investigated. This prompted me to make this episode with the questions, is there is an oversupply of architect graduates in Australia, and what % make it into an architect related job after completing their masters? I’m sure universities would gather such data; however, none are inclined to share it. To help answer these questions myself, I’ll explain the current situation of architecture and employability in Australia at the time of this recording, which is facing a skyrocketing dwelling undersupply, which should encourage the need for greater architectural services.
Drinking game: take a shot every time you hear the word architect.
There are many ways architect practices seek new work, essentially the goal is to prove their positive communal presence. There is marketing, pro-bono stuff etc. at the end of the day, most architects say word of mouth is the most powerful source for new work. Having positive experience with former clients, ie knowing someone with money who wants to use your services specifically, is a granted essential to have that foot in the door if you’re considering starting your own practice. It’s about an established trust that you won’t mess up. The larger firms have built and maintained a great relationship with the world, therefore are able to work pro bono or even research new ideas. I guarantee only very successful architecture practices are able to have this competitive edge, whereas smaller fry are fighting over tighter fees, therefore making the competition less about good design and more about staying afloat. Hence, the fight to the bottom analogy.
