In one way of telling it, the Exodus from Egypt is a ghost story. Lurking just underneath the triumphant and joyous narrative of leaving Egypt, there are hints of a darker, more complicated story of a people haunted by Yosef and the sin that brought them there in the first place. Just as Moshe retrieves Yosef’s bones, so too, we bring Yosef to our Seder, with hidden references throughout the Haggadah. How can we hold both joy and celebration along with guilt and accountability at the same time? How might we tell both stories at our Seder table?
