This video describes the monetary system of China from its inception to the early 20th century. Initially, tools and cowrie shells in bundles were used as money. Then, imitations of cowrie shells made of stone, jade, and later bronze served as coins.
Afterwards, copper ingots in the shape of tools, but in miniature form, were used as coins. During this period, round copper or bronze coins with a round hole in the middle appeared. During the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (248-210 BC), a bronze coin with a square hole in the middle, called banliang (convenient coin), was introduced.
These coins were also strung together, but on a square stick instead of a string. This form of coin remained in use until the early 20th century, with only the quality of minting improving over time.
The most interesting aspect is the use of paper money in China during the 11th to 14th centuries. Several examples of Chinese banknotes, as well as a few copper and even wooden printing plates for their production, have survived to this day.
In 1889, the yuan (which means "round" in Chinese) was introduced as the main coin.
