God is Waiting

Abel Ferrara's 1992 film, "Bad Lieutenant," is a dark and intimate character study of one of cinema's most conflicted men. The titular character is a cop with crippling addictions to booze and cocaine, and is an impulsive gambler who digs himself into immense debt. As the film goes on, his vices pull him further and further into a man-made Hell, from which he cannot see the light. However, when he involves himself in the case of a victimized nun, Lieutenant is given a rare chance at redemption. Given a last shot to turn his life around, Lieutenant is brought to the faith, and discovers a long-hidden side to himself: one who is honest, apologetic, and merciful. And as this better half emerges, he can't help but feel regret, for his entire life has been, up until this moment, an utter waste.
