The last ten days of September 2022 found us in Crete, Greece
amid project preparations with our friends from vocal ensemble Lalί Τouplί.
The unjust death of #MashaAmini was every day on our minds, in our discussions.
She was arrested because her scarf was not sitting right on her hair.
She was maltreated because her scarf was not sitting right on her hair.
She was killed because her scarf was not sitting right on her hair.
Protests in Tehran and in the world were multiplying, many arrests, police brutality, more deaths.
One of those dark days in September, when the sun set, we joined what we felt was most our own
our voices -
and sang for her
and for the women of Iran,
for the women who struggle to live free,
for the women who struggle in solidarity.

Lilith - Nena Venetsanou (1984)
Album: To kouti tis Pandoras
Lyrics/Music: Nena Venetsanou
(…)
"We live miserable, short lives
Who will break our spell
In our homes we live in silence
Who will conquer fear
Flower, night-flower
My sweet dark-haired nightingale
You’re flapping away your pain with your wings
On the dark threshing floor
And I feel the shivers
The winged scar
I don’t give it a name
Lilith, you pitch darkness
We live miserable, short lives
Who will break our spell
In our homes we live in silence
Who will conquer fear"
sung by Lalí Touplí and Perperúna Ensemble at Episkopi, Crete as a message of solidarity to the WomanLifeFreedom movement.
