The Gbagyi (also known as Gbari) are one of Nigeria's most resilient and culturally rich ethnic groups. Primarily settled in the North-Central geopolitical zone, they are the indigenous inhabitants of the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and have a deep presence across several states.
1. Geographic Distribution
The Gbagyi are widespread, often described as the "bonafide owners" of Abuja. Their population is primarily concentrated in:
Niger State: They are a dominant group in LGAs like Chanchaga, Shiroro, Bosso, Paikoro, Munya, and Rafi. Major towns include Minna (the state capital), Kuta, and Paiko.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT): As the original settlers of Abuja, they are found in all six area councils (Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and AMAC).
Kaduna State: Specifically in the southern and central parts, such as Chikun and Kagarko LGAs.
Nasarawa & Kogi States: Significant populations reside in Karu (Nasarawa) and parts of Kogi LGA.
2. The Niger State Connection
In Niger State, the Gbagyi are known for their deep-rooted history in Minna and Kuta.
Linguistic Subgroups: The Gbagyi are often divided into two main linguistic groups: Gbagyi-Ngenge (predominant in Minna, Kaduna, and Nasarawa) and Gbagyi-Yamma (found more toward the FCT and Niger State borders like Izom and Gawu).
Resilience: Historically, Gbagyi settlements in Niger State were often located on hilltops (like the hills surrounding Minna) to protect against invasions during the Fulani Jihads and slave raids.
3. Core Cultural Pillars
The Philosophy of "Gwari Gwari"
There is a famous Hausa saying, "Muyi shi Gwari Gwari," which means "Let’s do it in the Gbagyi way." This is a tribute to the Gbagyi reputation for being transparent, honest, and peaceful.
Unique Load-Carrying Tradition
One of the most striking cultural markers is that Gbagyi women carry loads on their shoulders (Bwapa) rather than their heads.
The Belief: They believe the head is the seat of the soul and intelligence; therefore, it is too sacred to be burdened with heavy loads.
Occupation & Artistry
Farming: They are legendary farmers, often referred to as the "food basket" of the region. They specialize in yam, millet, and ginger.
Pottery: Gbagyi women are world-renowned potters. The famous Ladi Kwali (whose face is on the N20 note) was a Gbagyi woman from Niger State.
Religion & "Knunu"
While many Gbagyi today are Christians or Muslims, they maintain a strong connection to Knunu (their traditional culture and belief system). They traditionally worship a supreme deity called Shekwoi, seeking his favor through ancestral intermediaries.
