Session Player Lessons: What Makes A Guitar Part???

What makes a part a part? When you're playing a song with a band, you probably shouldn't just strum chords the whole time. You need to come up with something that has a form or a shape to it. Guitar players are good at this for intros and turnarounds, but what about during the chorus? You should find a part that has a pattern within it that supports the vocal AND catches the ear (this is tricky). Here's an example.
