▶️ Students at Jamia Millia Islamia University throw bottles at a police car during a protest, Monday, December 16, over India's new citizenship bill that they see as a tool to discriminate against Muslims.
👉 Fresh protests rocked India on Monday as anger grew over new citizenship legislation after six people died in the northeast and up to 200 were injured in New Delhi.
The protests spread to student campuses all over the country Monday as critics said the Hindu nationalist government was pushing a partisan agenda in conflict with the country's founding as a secular republic.
Anger with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was fueled by allegations of police brutality at Jamia Millia Islamia university on Sunday, when officers entered the campus in the capital New Delhi and fired tear gas to break up a protest. At least 100 people were wounded. There were similar scenes at the Aligarh Muslim University in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where police also clashed with protesters.
The new law will fast track Indian citizenship for religious minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs and Christians who faced religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, but exclude Muslims. (VOA/REUTERS)
