An overnight trip to cycle through the wonderful Gap of Dunloe and climb the spectacular Purple Mountain in Kerry. The start of the Gap of Dunloe is approximately 13km from Killarney and is 6km long. I accessed Purple Mountain from the head of the gap and camped overnight at Glas Lough which is approximately half way up the mountain. This was a long awaited trip as I've been undergoing treatment for breast cancer in the previous 6 months. I felt very strong for this trip and although only 5 weeks since my surgery, I felt ready and it is important for my recovery to do more of what I love when I feel able to.
I've now completed my chemotherapy treatment plan and I've had surgery - initial scans and tissue sample results currently show no trace of cancer which is great. I've to continue taking Herceptin (targeted treatment) for a year and Tamoxifen (hormone treatment) for 5 years.
Maybe this video might show someone who gets a breast cancer diagnosis that they too may have the ability to do what they love again soon after their treatment. Doing a trip like this is a valuable part of my recovery process - to be active, out in the elements and feeling my life force increase!
