A Protection relay which operates when the load current exceeds a preset value is called an overcurrent relay.
The value of preset current above which the relay operates is known as its pick-up value. Overcurrent relay offers the cheapest and simplest form of protection. It is used for protection of Lines, Large motors, power equipment industrial systems etc. An overcurrent relay protection Scheme may include one or more over current relays. IDMT relay gives an inverse time-current characteristic, if lower values of the fault current and definite time characteristic, if higher values of fault current. Generally, an inverse time characteristics is obtain if the value of plug setting multiplier (PSM) is below 10. For the values of PSM between 10 to 20 the characteristics tends to become straight line that is toward the definite time characteristics.
