Why no one live in North Dakota | U.S. Geography
There are over 70,000 square miles in North Dakota — but less than 800,000 people live there. That’s fewer people than in San Francisco. And yet, this state is the 19th largest in the entire country. It has oil, farmland, small cities, and a long history of settlement. But still — people keep moving out. Between 2021 and 2022, North Dakota lost nearly 3,000 residents, while its neighbor Montana gained over 16,000. That might seem odd, since the two states share the same region, and some similar landscapes. So what makes North Dakota different — and why do so few people stay?
