NOTE: Jumping back and forth between 0:00 and 0:17 is the most noticeable difference between the Larsen and Jargar uppers. 0:13 and 0:30 will compare the lower strings.
BACKGROUND:
Two different private lesson clips with two different sets of strings. In the first clip, I have Larsen standard A and D and Magnacore G and C, all medium gauge. In the second clip, I have Jargar Superior A and D and Thomastik Spirocore tungsten G and C, all medium as well. It's subtle on camera, but if you jump around in the clip you can hear the difference.
I find the Magnacores to be by far the better lower strings, with much better response and overall feel and less "fizz." They are ever so slightly less powerful than the Spirocores, which I find to be very "brutish" and unrefined. The Spirocores break into some nasty sizzling when pushed to their max volume, but the Magnacores keep their composure and remain clear.
The Jargar Superior A destroys the Larsen. It's thick and juicy all the way up and sounds good at any dynamic. Projection is excellent. The Jargar Superior D is a bit of a let-down. It has the same richness in tone but is more subdued. Several other reviewers had the same experience, so I chalk it up to Jargar's manufacturing. They say the Jargar Special D actually matches the Superior A quite well, so I may try that.
The Magnacore lower strings are by far the winners for me. And I hear the A and D rival or exceed the Jargars, so my next test will be a full Magnacore set, probably forte gauge, because who doesn't want more rumble?
