Summer in Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, located in the San Bernardino National Forest, is approximately 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. It is a man made, fresh water lake seven miles long and about 1/2 mile wide. Summer temperatures average 80 degrees during the day and 45 degrees at night while winter temperatures are in the low 40's during the day, and mid 20's at night.
It is home to bald eagles, deer, bears, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, and numerous other species. About 29 species of rare plants are protected in the Valley.
It is also known for fishing, picnicking, water sports, hiking, biking, horseback riding, winter sports, star gazing to see nature's beautiful night backdrop, a 9-hole golf course, 7 public campgrounds, restaurants, entertainment and shopping. The Big Bear City Airport is open 24 hours a day.

The city also hosts festivals, concerts, and parties almost every weekend.

Big Bear Discovery Center is a regional visitor and nature center. The center teaches visitors information about the San Bernardino National Forest, its natural history, beauty and natural resources. It offers National Forest Adventure Passes, camping information, hiking & biking maps, maps of forest roads & designated off-road vehicle areas, Forest Service permits, naturalist-led tours, and interpretive programs. There is no entrance fee to the center.

Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) is a university-based solar observatory in the United States. It is operated by New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). A solar observatory is an observatory that specializes in monitoring the Sun. As such, they usually have one or more solar telescopes. Solar observatories study phenomena associated with the Sun. The Sun, being the closest star to earth, allows a unique chance to study stellar physics with high-resolution.

The location at Big Bear Lake is optimal due to the clarity of the sky and the presence of a body of water. The telescopes and instruments at the observatory are designed and employed specifically for studying the activities and phenomena of the Sun.
