尋橋 Chum Kiu - Seeking Bridge
The name Chum Kiu hints at the idea that we want to "seek" out and establish contact with the limbs (bridges) of the opponent so that we can use our Chi-Sau tactile sensitivity skills to nullify our opponent.
This is the 2nd form in the Wing Chun system. Here, after learning the basic hand techniques in the stationary Siu Nim Tau form, you start to learn how to use the hand techniques in coordination with the body and footwork.
In the 3rd set of Chum Kiu presented here is where it becomes a completely unique form from Siu Nim Tau. This is the longest of the six sets in the Chum Kiu form. We now have Stance Turning, as well as complex techniques where the hands will do different movements independent of each other. Siu Nim Tau has the characteristic of both hands doing the same technique simultaneously, or doing a sequence of movements starting with the left hand only and then repeating those same movements with the right hand. Here in Chum Kiu you see both hands performing distinct movements simultaneously. Starting with the Chuen-Sau (Piercing-Arms), then the three Turning Lan-Sau (Bar-Arms), Three Pak-Sau (Slapping-Hands), Three Palm Strikes, Three Bong-Sau (Wing-Arms), finishing with a Punch, Fak-Sau (Wisking-Arm), Fook-Sau (Resting-Arm), Single Chuen-Sau (Piercing Arm), and then you repeat the whole sequence on the right side as well.
