More than 300 Santa Monica community members spoke for almost four hours about issues of development and urban design, including heights, density, parking, traffic and housing, as well as the the role of and 'opportunity sites' in the Land Use and Circulation Element and the Downtown Specific Plan. Held at the Downtown Specific Plan Community Workshop. Santa Monica Civic Auditorium East Wing, 1855 Main St. Monday, May 6th -- 6pm to 11pm.
This workshop was hosted by the Planning Commission and began with a staff presentation, followed by unlimited time per speaker, for members of the public to speak. The informational notice for the workshop stated that it would include "an open discussion on: Development Standards of height and density, Opportunity Sites of unlimited height and density, Circulation Strategies, and Process for Proposed Projects. The [Downtown Specific] Plan is required to implement Land Use and Circulation (LUCE) policies that encourage a diversity of uses downtown that foster a high quality of life, economic vitality, and cultural enrichment while trying to minimize the impact of vehicle trips and managing congestion."
