"A New Year Carol," sometimes known as "Levy-Dew," is a medieval Welsh folk song traditionally sung on New Year's Day while sprinkling people with water from a new well. Benjamin Britten set the text to music in 1934.
Text:
Here we bring new water from the well so clear,
For to worship God with, this happy New Year.
Sing levy-dew, sing levy-dew, the water and the wine,
The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.
Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe;
Open you the West Door and turn the Old Year go.
Sing levy-dew, sing levy-dew, the water and the wine,
The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.
Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her chin;
Open you the East Door and let the New Year in.
Sing levy-dew, sing levy-dew, the water and the wine,
The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.
The meaning of the phrase "levy-dew" is debatable. It may be a version of the Welsh phrase "llef y Dduw," meaning "a cry to God." Another possibility is the corruption of the French phrase "levez à Dieu," "raise to God", which may be a reference to the elevation of the host at Mass.
