Here I will break it down for you and make it super simple! This is what I expect as an attending surgeon when I have students and residents scrub with me.

I also explain how I prepare for cases as an attending pediatric surgeon.

If you're a medical student, there are two things that are absolutely necessary for you to get the most education out of a surgery case! You must know...

The Who

AND

The What

The Who, of course, is the patient. When you come to the operating room you've got to know everything possible about the patient. Take a thorough history and physical exam, ask yourself what's wrong?

After knowing The Who you'll need to take a deep dive into The What, that's the anatomy and the pathology. Think about anatomical relationships and read about the pathology you're going to help fix when in the operating room.

I'm going to leave some book recommendations for the student, intern and residents as well so definitely check those out!

If you're an intern you're going to want to check off The Who and The What, and importantly you must start thinking and understanding The Why!

Why are we in the operating room for this pathology? What are we in the OR now? W hy not tomorrow or next week?

Residents will building on this by getting a more detailed understanding of the Why and now add in the How? How is an operation done, what are the technical details?
