This video is from the third episode of our online event series, “Newsreel Asia Conversations,” featuring filmmaker Arastu Zakia. Our conversation explores how filmmakers are filling the gaps in nonfiction storytelling through cinematic touch, and how Arastu’s multidisciplinary journey shapes his commitment to public interest narratives and emotionally resonant stories.
Arastu Zakia’s short film Riha (Unlocked) begins with everyday scenes from a typical middle-class household—except the family is Muslim. A quiet yet powerful tribute to his mother, renowned women’s rights activist Zakia Soman, Riha reflects on identity, memory, and resistance, honouring her role in the movement against triple talaq. His film was selected at India’s only Oscar-qualifying festival, BISFF, the world’s only Oscar-qualifying South Asian festival, Tasveer in Seattle, and the Dharamshala International Film Festival.
