Biševo is a small offshore island located about 5 kilometers from the island of Vis.
The ferry ride to Biševo takes 45 minutes, and the ferry is the island's only connection to the world.
The ferry to Biševo only operates three times a week and only when the weather is favorable.
Biševo once had over 500 inhabitants; today, it is about a dozen people.
There are several villages on the island...Mezuporat, Porat, Sablunara, and the largest village located in the center of the island, Poje.
There is an 11th-century church in Poje.
The highest peak on the island is Stražbenica ( 239 m ).
I decided to hike up there because I was interested in the WW2 positions built in early spring 1944. by the partisans for defence against possible German landings.
The view from the top is of the surrounding islands, and Italy can also be seen.
There is also the southernmost cape on Biševo, Gatula.
It is a place of wild beauty, which hides a former Yugoslav coastal artillery battery built during the Cold War in such a way that it protected the crew from a nuclear attack.
