A compound adjective is an adjective that contains two or more words. They are usually joined together by a hyphen (-) or hyphens to clarify that the words are working as a single unit.
-Our office is in a twenty-storey building.
-I have just finished reading a 300-page book.
-He is a well-known writer.
-Look at that top-of-the-range car.
Compare:
-She drove a yellow-striped car.
-She drove a yellow, striped car.
1. Adjective + Noun
-I made a last-minute decision to stay home.
-Most of their staff are on short-term contracts.
-We create high-quality resources.
-We watched the full-length version of the movie.
-I can only find part-time work at the moment.
-I need to study the long-term effects of alcohol on human bodies.
2. Adjective + Present Participle
-She is a good-looking girl.
-It left a long-lasting taste in my mouth.
-She wore a pair of tight-fitting jeans.
-The quick-thinking staff got everyone to safety.
-His easy-going nature made him popular.
3. Adjective + Past Participle
-I found a long-forgotten painting in the attic.
-He doesn’t like to cook so he buys ready-made meals.
-They had a short-lived romance.
-That is an old-fashioned dress.
-Reptiles are cold-blooded creatures.
4. Noun + Adjective
-We often go to the family-friendly restaurant near our house.
-There is nothing better than an ice-cold drink on a hot day.
-She is a world-famous singer.
-This is a smoke-free restaurant.
5. Noun + Present Participle
-I bought some mouth-watering strawberries.
-That was a record-breaking jump.
-I used to live in an English-speaking country.
-We need more time-saving devices.
6. Noun + Past Participle
-We should start using wind-powered generators to cut costs.
-I added some sun-dried tomatoes to the platter.
-Living with Henry had made her feel middle-aged.
-My new water-cooled gaming PC is quieter than my old one.
-I was tongue-tied when I met celebrity.
7. Adverb + Past Participle
-This classroom is a brightly-lit room.
-He is a well-known actor.
They live in a densely populated city.
-The puppy was well-behaved.
-For our country to remain competitive, we need a highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce.
-Generally, people want a highly paid job.
8. Number + Singular Noun
We can combine a number with a noun of measurement (length, height, weight, time, or age) to form a compound adjective.
-It’s only the 10-storey building in the town.
-We bought a three-foot sandwich to share.
-The eight-pound bag fell to the floor.
-I had a three-week vacation.
When indicating age, we often add the adjective ‘old’ to the end.
-His 11-year-old niece is coming to visit.
-My 9-month-old daughter can stand up now.
When we indicate cost, we normally use numbers with symbols such as $, £, €, etc. When the currency is spelled out, however, we must use hyphens to form compound adjectives. Likewise, we use hyphens if the numerals are spelled out as well.
-He bought a $9, 000 car.
-He bought a 9, 000-dollar car.
-He bought a nine-thousand-dollar car.
We also use numbers with other nouns.
-There was an 11-car pile-up on the highway.
-The theatre has a 400-person capacity.
Note: My brother has Type 2 diabetes.
9. Proper nouns
We sometimes use a multi-word proper noun to identify a noun belonging to a particular person or brand. In this case, we do not hyphenate the words.
-Can you play any Elton John songs?
-Did you see the Arthur Miller play on Broadway?
10. Others
-You need an up-to-date computer to run this software.
-I’ve lived in too many run-down apartments.
-Who was the on-call surgeon when you needed the operation?
-I find her salt-and-pepper hair very attractive.
-My niece is an up-and-coming young actress.
-This is a life-and-death decision.
-I was born in an out-of-the-way village.
