The Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) is the foundation of the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) and is integrated across all NCLEX-RN Client Needs categories.
In this video, we explain how NCLEX uses the six-step Clinical Judgment Measurement Model to assess a nurse’s ability to make safe, evidence-based clinical decisions using case studies, bowtie, and matrix questions.
🧠 The NCLEX Clinical Judgment Measurement Model:
• Recognise cues
– identify relevant data from case studies
– interpret lab trends and vital sign changes
• Analyse cues
– cluster related data
– generate clinical hypotheses
– differentiate normal vs abnormal findings
• Prioritise hypotheses
– apply ABCs and Maslow’s hierarchy
– distinguish acute vs stable conditions
– identify life-threatening problems
• Generate solutions
– select appropriate nursing interventions
– apply delegation and pharmacology principles
• Take action
– choose correct actions in NGN item formats
• Evaluate outcomes
– assess effectiveness using bowtie and matrix questions
📚 How to Study Using the CJMM:
• slow down and analyse cues before answering
• think like a bedside nurse, not a test-taker
• practise NGN case studies with full rationales
• apply the CJMM steps to every NCLEX question
This lesson is designed for NCLEX-RN candidates and internationally educated nurses preparing for US nursing licensure.
